PA#1 – A Simple Paragraph

Hello, students,

Paragraph Assignment #1 – Basic Downshifting

We'll actually write the paragraph in class on Wednesday, so you need only bring detailed notes to class. In the meantime, observe your environment. Look around. Take some notes.

Define and describe a problem here at Ohio Wesleyan. Start with a topic sentence that defines the problem. Then describe the problem in more detail in subsequent sentences. Finally, give a detailed example of the problem. Use the details to illuminate the description above.

Write a well developed paragraph that follows the basic downshifting pattern we will discuss in class. Sometime over the weekend, post your paragraph to the blog as a "comment" to this assignment. Also, BRING A HARD COPY THE PARAGRAPH TO CLASS on Friday so that I can read them outside of class.

We will follow that basic pattern on all the paragraphs you write during the first weeks of the semester:

Day 1: Draft the paragraph. Blog it ASAP.

Next class day: Edit the previous paragraph and draft the next one.

    1. The little things in life
Last semester was a groundbreaking year, there were ups and downs, likes and dislikes, as well as trials and tribulations. For example: my Theatre class was probably one of my most loved classes that I took last semester but, then you had the heavily recommended UC 160 class that is now a requirement ! now that is the class I may have had the most disdain for because despite it being a great class and the professors that taught the subject were absolutely astounding, (I use that term loosely) not to mention the fact that it is one of the most simplest ways to learn the ins and outs of the Ohio Wesleyan university, there is one minor setback for me however that really just dawns on me. The fact that it is only worth a quarter credit (0.25). The reason why this is a problem is because we did more work in that one class than we did in 3 classes that were worth a whole credit for a 4th of the credit. I mean, don’t get me wrong I loved every single assignment that I did in that class, but I feel as though it should be worth at least 0.5- 1.00 credits for those taking it next year

    4. Other problems pertaining to the showers at smith is that the showers are controlled by two different faucets: one for hot and one for cold. Besides the fact that it is mighty difficult to find the perfect balance of hot and cold water, the showers have a tendency to become scorching hot or freezing cold. These showers need to be improved because any disturbance in the water pressure, such as a toilet flushing, will change the concentration of the water to be unbearably hot or cold. An example of this is on the first day of class when I was getting ready to start the day. When I entered the shower, I was able to find a tolerable concentration of hot and cold by adjusting the two faucets. I thought this was going to be a typical relaxing shower, but I was mistaken. As I was reaching for the shampoo, I felt a hot scorching pain hit my head and roll down my back. At first I could not tell if it was hot or cold. All I knew was that I was in intolerable pain. I reached for the faucets in desperation to lower the hot water and raise the cold-water faucet. The temperature of the shower gradually lowered to a tolerable degree. I was soon able to enjoy a sign of relief. I rinsed my head and I reached for the body wash until I felt something hit the back of my neck and trickle down my spine. This time the water was not scorching hot, but it was ice cold. All of the hairs on the back of my neck shot up and goose bumbs started to appear all over my body. Fortunately, I was able to rinse myself off and make it out of the shower. This would occur every time I would enter the shower and make me despise such a pleasurable time.

  3. Superfluous times during the weekend, I have woken up at a reasonable hour, only to find that Smith has yet to serve breakfast. After finding out that they serve breakfast at eleven in the morning on weekends, I realized exactly how insufficient this truly is for many different types of people. For example, people that prefer to exercise during the morning are disadvantaged by there being no breakfast available. Also, people that choose to start their day earlier to complete homework are at a disadvantage as well, as it is common knowledge that people are not as productive when they have not eaten yet. The people who chose to start their day earlier, whatever the reason may be, are kept from reaching their full potential because of breakfast started too late. A simple solution would be to serve breakfast at an earlier hour. In conclusion, Smith serves breakfast too late on weekends, which prevents the people who chose to start their day earlier from reaching their full potential.

  4. Students at Ohio Wesleyan University come from various backgrounds and have different personalities, but they all have a similar goal—earn a college education. The school prides itself on its diverse student body, which consists of students from 43 different states and 33 different countries, according to the university’s website. While students take different courses and expand their liberal arts education, they explore their future career interests. In doing so, they look to their professors for guidance and inspiration. One of the most popular departments at Ohio Wesleyan is the biological and biomedical sciences, with majors ranging from botany to biomedical engineering to neuroscience, but the professors and faculty members do not seem to be as diverse. Among the faculty members in the prestigious science department, there are only three who are Asian, but the rest are Caucasian. This creates a problem amidst students who are dissimilar from their professors. Many students have complained about this situation because they are left without a mentor who can relate to them. Ultimately this lack of different faculty members who instruct a wide group of diverse students discourages them from pursuing highly distinguished careers in the science fields.

  5. Uncivilized students at Ohio Wesleyan University instill frustration and disgust among resident assistants and fellow students. On many occasions, drunk students return to campus to vandalize school property, cause ruckus in the hallways, and terrorize peers. For instance, several mornings, residents of Smith Hall have woken up to find the elevator out of order because drunk students have urinated in it. Residents recall the elevator smelling of urine, smoke, and vomit. Some students have even fallen prey to the elevator’s breakdowns, thus, trapping them in the elevator’s putrid smells. Students believe that public safety officers post out of order signs before disorderly people return in order to prevent elevator malfunctions. Other examples of uncivilized behavior includes students throwing food down stairwells, excreting in community showers and sinks, and pushing classmates into the fountain. The lack of maturity and respect shown by disorderly students frustrates the community because the costs of damages are distributed among the residents. The university has failed to prevent disruptive, destructive behavior among unruly students.

  6. There are many problems at OWU. Everyone’s problem is different in some kind of way. It has to do with the way that you were brought up and the environment that you grew up in. One of my main problems at OWU is the cold weather. It feels so cold outside sometimes you don’t even want to come to class. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I’m sure people don’t even go to class because of the weather outside especially when it snows. Maybe the cold weather is why the population of the school is probably so low but probably not. That comes to my second problem the schools population in how many students goes here. I think this is a problem because college is about meeting new people and I want to meet as many new people as I can. How can you do that going to a small school? Don’t get me wrong you still can meet a good amount of people but not like the potential of going to Ohio State.

  7. As I sit on my bed using my computer, I begin to relax with my daily Netflix binge after finishing my work for the night. I then realize that because of the terrible wifi Ohio Wesleyan has, it takes a lot longer for me to relax when all I see is the video buffering. I am not a patient person and having to deal with BishopNet it really does not help the fact that I just want relax and watch some of my favorite shows. I am not the only one who feels this way. When my friends are I are eating lunch we even sometimes talk about have the wifi cuts out during the middle of the day when it is most needed. When I came to Ohio Wesleyan I did not expect to have to use my cellular data to search the web and research for my classes because my computer cannot connect to BishopNet. During the last semester the wifi cut out on me in very crucial times. Towards the end of the semester I was researching for an Economics paper and right in the middle of my research, the wifi just stopped working for my computer. I sat looking at a screen that said, “Sorry can’t find a wireless connection,” for about thirty minutes until it finally came back to life so I could finish my research. The wifi is and has been a huge problem at this school from what I have heard, and I believe at some point the school must try and fix the only wireless connection us students have to use on campus.

  8. Nearing the end of the semester, every student attending their colleges must sign up for new classes for the upcoming semester. Everything works out beautifully and well laid out that fits to your liking. Until the day to register at an ungodly hour, students sit patiently in front of their computers while the web engine works overtime due to the flood of students trying to register at once. I have talked to multiple students, and maybe a fourth of the people I have talked to get their schedule they had created. Unfortunately I was not part of the chosen few, and after forty minutes of struggling with my computer to oblige, all of the classes I chosen were filled and I had to opt for classes that were left. This is a major problem for students attending universities that need to sign up for certain classes to fulfill their major requirements, especially those classes designed for certain years.

  9. After a long morning of classes, students stop by the most popular place to eat on campus, the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center or “Hamwill.” Hamwill supplies hungry college students with all the delicious nutrients that growing, young adults need. With new editions to the menu everyday, starving young adults never have to eat the same meal two days in a row. Everything from salads, to a whole chicken dinner, Hawill does not disappoint. After you have obtained your fresh meal you start the most problematic procedure on campus, checkout. With close to fifty people in Hamwill at one time, and only two or three cashiers, this process can take up a good chunk of your well earned lunch time. By the time you have purchased your food and picked the perfect place to sit, your food is now cold.

  11. When high school seniors, talk to college students the “freshman 15" is always brought up. The freshman 15 is the 15 pounds the average freshman gains at school in the first year. Many people say this weight gain is due to lack of exercise, too much partying, and not making good food choices. Well, it is no surprise to me that the freshman 15 is real because OWU’s campus does not provide students with good tasting, fresh, healthy food. For example, it does not give the opportunity for students to make good food choices because there are very few good tasting, healthy options in OWU’s cafeterias. It is important to keep a healthy lifestyle when coming to college; by limiting the amount of satisfying, healthy food, OWU is promoting bad eating habits and discouraging students from taking care of themselves. For example, when walking through Hamwill cafeteria, there are limited healthy choices. I admit there is always a salad bar, and sometimes a little bit of fruit in decent condition, but what else? Unfortunately, I could easily name a hand full of tasty, unhealthy foods readily available. This imbalance of healthy versus unhealthy food choices is a problem, and one that really needs to change. When walking into OWU’s cafeteria, students should have no trouble finding something healthy and delicious to eat. With today's youth obesity problem, it really does come as a surprise to me that OWU doesn't take more care and put more thought into what types of food they are making available and what sorts of habits they are encouraging. After all, we are what we eat.

  13. Ohio Wesleyan is one of the inimitable campus I've stepped a foot on,in high school I been to fifteen college around the country different states and I can say the campus make an great impression every time I walk around it. There is one problem the bathroom, yea i know out of all thing the bathroom? It's the small things that becomes the biggest problem. It caught me by surprise when I first walked into the bathroom I really was not expecting the bathrooms to look as bad as it do. I'm sure other people feel the Same way bt nobody going to go out there way to complain about in to the school. Other than that I love Ohio Wesyan

  14. Campus Safety
In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that as many as 4,743 pedestrian fatalities occurred due to car related accidence in the United States. This number seems small when compared to the 76 thousand pedestrians injured that same year, however, it is a number that people should strive to reduce. Although texting while driving has certainly contributed to theses tragic events, many of these injuries and fatalities could have been avoided simply by installing a stop light in the correct location. A good example of this would be South Washington St, located next to the Chappelear Drama Center. This is arguably one of Ohio Wesleyan Universities most frequented areas by students. It is used for crossing over from the residential, to the academic side of campus. Unlike the crossing of Sandusky St, South Washington St dose not have a stop light system. The only safety precautions put in place for pedestrians are stop signs, and a paint marked cross walk system. During the winter season, snow sticks to the stop signs, often over night, and in the darker hours of the morning. This prevents the snow from melting, and more importantly, increases the chances of an incident occurring. Student’s have been hit in the past, causing the universities security a great deal of concern. The campus security officers typically warn students to beware whilst crossing the street. If 8 million dollars can be invested in the restoration of an academic building, why can’t a few thousand dollars be spent in order to further increase the safety of the students?

  16. Nothing in this world is perfect. Ohio Wesleyan University is not an exception to this rule. As a person who lived his whole life in the warm and sunny weather of the Mediterranean sea, the weather I came across in Delaware Ohio was the biggest problem I had to face. Back home, where the weather never drops below 35 degrees Fahrenheit, it was hard for me to imagine this feeling. Before this winter, the only place I had seen people wearing big furry jackets, beanies, boots and scarves was on television. I am used to spending my day mostly outside and now I regret the times I take the decision to get out of Bashford Hall. But even though sometimes I feel caged in, I feel like it is a blessing for someone to be in a school where that is its biggest problem.

  18. New school, new start, new friends, and new professors. I am a transfer from Sacred Heart University, in Fairfield Connecticut. I am a sophomore right now at Ohio Wesleyan. I love this school, my friends, and my professors here, but my problem at Ohio Wesleyan is the school accepting my credits for certain classes. Before I transferred to Ohio Wesleyan, I went to a liberal arts school, similar to Ohio Wesleyan. I took classes that are normally required as a freshman. I took math, science, history, and english. None of the credits were accepted, which means I have take all these classes over. When I could be focusing on classes for my major. Which makes me worried that I won’t be able to graduate when I am supposed to, because I might not have enough credits to do so.

  20. As I sit in the library looking around me on the second floor of the library I instantaneously notice that most students are using the internet in some way shape or form. While I stare off in my peers direction with a glazed over look in my eye I wonder how many other people are using the internet right now and if our simultaneous usage of such network is the cause of Ohio Wesleyan’s problem- the problem of poor wifi connection. The wifi at OWU, also better known as Bishop Net, is a wifi network that spans across the entire campus. Students try to connect their laptops and other electronic devices to the internet but fall short due to slow internet connection or the lack of ability to connect to the internet. Often when students try to read or submit assignments on Blackboard, a website used by many professors to assign and receive assignments, they are unable to do so because of this problem. Many rather than spend their whole day trying to get Bishop Net to work, instead use their phone data as a last resort. An easy solution would be to add more internet modems around the campus. Nevertheless, it is an issue that is not only time consuming, but also extremely frustrating.

  21. A common problem at OWU is the earliness in which the trash is taken from the dumpsters. As someone with a dorm room that is in close proximity to the dumpsters, this poses a large problem. While I attempt to sleep for my classes, I am woken very early in the morning by the loud blaring of the garbage truck. This rude awakening doesn’t happen consistently, rather it happens at random. That makes it impossible to try and time which days the garbage truck is coming. The early and loud awakening proceeds to be a major detriment to my ability to complete schoolwork. It is a problem that could easily be changed. I believe that OWU could easily request to have the trash picked up later in the day, making it far easier to get a good night’s rest.

  22. Residential life at Ohio Wesleyan is thriving – monetarily at least. The university makes a massive profit off of making students live on campus all four years. This policy does students no favors as they transition into the “real world”, facing a reality far removed from the cozy confines of campus and all its amenities. I faced this reality over the summer as I ventured to Pittsburgh, seeking solace in the fact that I would eventually return, where matters of paying rent and cooking dinner would surely dissipate. My summer contained many mishaps, as I managed to run out of gas on the highway (twice). Somehow though, there was always a cigarette in hand.

  23. On the residential side of campus, especially Bashford hall, bishopnet is extremely poor. It is hard to maintain a strong Internet connection in my dorm room. Everyday I am able to connect to bishopnet, but this only lasts a little while because soon after, I get disconnected. This problem occurs with both my laptop and my Iphone. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s something that gets quite irritating after a while, to continuously re-connect and then be disconnected again and again. Already during this semester, I was trying to do some reading for my Biology class online, but I kept getting disconnected so I was not able to load my readings. Eventually, I was able to stay connected long enough to finish my work, but it took longer because of the bad connection in my room. When using my phone, I also get disconnected, and because of that I start to use up my data when using certain apps, when I should be able to stay connected to the wifi and not have to worry about my data.

  24. Scrolling through my various social media accounts I began to notice an alarming trend. “Bishop Net is *expletive*!” one would say. “*Expletive* Bishop Net!” another would say. This has slowly become a stronger issue at Ohio Wesleyan and students are fed up with it. Many a times I have attempted to use the Wi-Fi while doing homework, particularly around the times of 8:00 P.M. – 11:00 P.M. and have had troubles loading even a single web page. I am not alone here. Talking to my fellow bishops, they too, have experienced this problem. The most frustrating cases have been on class registration the morning of. Students often find their selves unable to sign up for classes because the internet can’t handle the traffic of users. As a student paying $12,000 a semester wouldn’t one think the internet would be better?

  25. Ohio Wesleyan University is a small liberal arts college in Delaware, Ohio. It is home to approximately 1,800 students, all undergraduates. All of these students have studying to do, papers to write, research to be done. In the modern times of 2016, all work done in college is almost all done using a computer or laptop. The problem with all 1,800 students at Ohio Wesleyan using their computers is they all require access to the internet and this causes a really big problem. The internet and wifi speeds on campus are dreadful. With 1,800 students on one internet server, it causes very slow and lagging internet speeds. As a result, in recent months, the Ohio Wesleyan Tech Department/Help Desk has started installing new and improved wifi routers across campus in hopes of increasing wifi internet speed and efficiency. The improvements were seen, but on a very minor scale. If Ohio Wesleyan is to remain a top liberal arts school in the area during this modern time, it is essential the wifi internet speed problem is addressed.

  26. When first choosing to attend Ohio Wesleyan University, I saw all of the positive aspects that make this place great. After spending a semester here, I have realized there are many things that need to be fixed, but one of the most obvious problems is the lack of parking at the dorms. Many students that go to Ohio Wesleyan come from all over and are very far away from home and do not have family that live near campus. A car is necessity for these students to be able to function and not be isolated to just the Ohio Wesleyan campus. At Smith Hall, one of the larger dorms on campus, has a very limited number of spaces. The spaces themselves are barely large enough to fit a mid sized vehicle without having to let the car door hit the car next to it to squeeze out. If you arrive back to the dorm any later than 7 o’clock at night, you have no chance of finding a spot. You have to resort to driving around until you finally settle for making your own make-shift spot. Once parked in the spot that isn’t affecting traffic or putting anyone or anything in harm you will come out later to find a ticket waiting for you tucked under your
windshield wiper. It is a massive issue for students who already pay so much to come here.

  27. One of the problems with Ohio Wesleyan is the Smith Dorms. I walked into Smith Hall knowing that I was going to find a stereotypical college dorm room, but hoping to be wrong. Unfortunately I was not, the dorm room only met my expectations. One of the problems I noticed with the Smith Dorm rooms is how small the room actually is. The room would be perfect for one person, but with two people sharing such a minimal amount of space it leaves some problems for the roommates. The closets are very small, leaving myself to stuff my remaining clothes into the drawers that the dorm provides for us and still not having much space for the rest of my clothes because you have to take into account what your roommate has. I also had to raise my bed to the top in order to throw some of my school supplies and food for the semester under the bed. This is a pain because there is no more room for simple things like a microwave, a fridge, or even just trying to walk at the same time your roommate without tripping over something or bumping into them. These small, compact rooms leaves students such as myself urging to get out of the dorm rooms because of how frustrating and time consuming it gets to figure out how to fit everything you feel like you need into such a small room.

  28. The problem I encountered here is that the quality of franchised food is below the average. The franchised food that I refer to is the Starbucks in Merrick and Stuy and Papa Johns in Hamwill. What I got from the Starbucks in Stuy, which was supposed to be hot chocolate, was basically water of brown color. My friend told me that coffee in Merrick was not much different than my watery hot choloate either. The Papa Johns in Hamwill is the same. Whether I grab a sausage or cheese or pepperoni, they all taste nearly the same. They taste like tomato sauce. This springs from lack of toppings and overuse of tomato sauce as a base in an effort to make a pizza taste like something at least. This kind of food of low quality is not worth any of our food points. I wish this problem could be fixed soon enough.

  29. As I walk down the once joyful aisle of Bashford Hall, I detected that the quantity of scholars that once occupied the living area, Bashford Hall, had decreased dramatically for reasons that were unknown to me. To understand the problem, I began to ask friends and acquaintances about their claims about the sudden emptiness of our living space and most of their responses were that the selected scholars did not return to campus because of their GPA were under Ohio Wesleyan average GPA of a 1.0. According to the Ohio Wesleyan University website, many first-year students frequently encounter unforeseen academic challenges in their fall semester that result in academic probation or expulsion. According to most students, the primary reason they were placed on the Ohio Wesleyan Probation list was due to the sudden surplus of free time and the new found freedom that was acquired in the first semester of their freshman year. An example a student gave to me stated that she had classes from 9 am to 12 pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday and after her class, she had the entire day to do as she pleased. With all that free time, she found herself going out to parties, watching multiplies hours of Netflix and participating in activities which was not related to her school work. And as time progressed she found herself falling behind in most of her classes; that caused her to withdraw from one and also discouraged her from applying herself and working to the best of her abilities.

  30. Ohio Wesleyan is normally a campus that is easy to walk, but when it snowed for the first time, it was difficult. The snow removal was very poor. There was snow covering most of the staircases around campus. The steps in front of Bashford Hall were covered the entire day. People slipped and fell due to the amount of snow that was not removed. Sandusky Street was also difficult to cross. There were piles of sludge and snow where students cross the street. The Jaywalk and sidewalks were also difficult for students. Only a sliver of the Jaywalk was clear of snow. The sidewalks were covered early in the morning, causing difficulty for students with morning classes.

  31. As a freshman who has not had the time to observe every aspect of the campus grounds, I have come to notice that there is a slight problem with the campus. That is the snow management process. Obviously Ohio, along with the rest of the midwest, is known to have a cold, snowy winter. Upon returning to campus from winter break, we were welcomed with a few inches of snow. I, along with other students here, would have expected the pathways to be cleared and salted. Instead, we were faced with a challenging trek of snow and ice anywhere we wanted to go. I think that the school should be more prepared about the snow. It is very easy to plow the roads and walkways. All it takes is a little effort but I feel as if the groundskeepers are too busy worrying about the beautification of the campus.
