Write a paragraph using the basic pattern found on p. 14 - 15 of TSIS, both the second and third editions, (Assignment #1). Use the italicized words to structure what would essentially become an introductory paragraph to a larger essay.
Post your paragraph by Thursday, 1/21, and bring a hard copy to class on 1/22.
It is popular opinion among various professors that computers are too distracting for the students and should not be allowed in class. They see computers as a negative impact impeding on the students willingness to learn. However, I substantially disagree with that stance, and I firmly believe that computers should be encouraged in the classroom. While I do agree they have the potential to be distracting, it is merely down to the student’s willingness to refuse the temptation of the distractions. With or without a computer, a student unwilling to learn will always find distractions. Furthermore, I believe the distractions on the computer are ultimately a good thing for students, as it will test their willpower and determination to eschew from those temptations. In addition, computers are a very proactive source of technology that should be embraced in the classroom just as it is embraced in the adult world. Computers are multifunctional as they can serve as a way to take notes, a dictionary, and way to find critical information among other things. Computers should be allowed in class because they are very proactive tools, their role in the adult world is heavily increasing, and it is ultimately down to the student to avoid the distractions.
ReplyDeleteIt is no secret that the Swiss education system perceives dyslexia as little more then a hoax. There are teachers who believe that students with said learning deficit are not eligible for the pursuit of higher education, and should not even bother attempting such an endeavor. Instead of challenging dyslexic students, teachers assign them a fraction of the homework their “normal” peers are required to complete, effectively dumbing down the lesson so as to create a false sense of accomplishment. However, I believe students with dyslexia have the equal amount of potential, same as any other students, who are willing to learn. As well as being more then capable of thinking logically and comprehend information, it is my personal opinion that the heart ships these students experience in school build incredible characters. Characters of sheer will power, filled with eagerness to prove whoever once may have doubted them wrong. Further more, there is more then ample proof throughout history, that shows dyslexic individuals have been able to find success, yes, even in academic fields such as writing. To say that a student is incapable of learning, and refusing to put forth the effort to teach said student, I believe, is entirely unjust, even criminal. The way in witch the Swiss education system is currently organized, thousands of bright young students with incredible minds are being discarded as unteachable. It is time to change the system.
ReplyDeleteBeing from an Asian descent—whether it be full Asian, half, or one-sixteenth—is typically associated with being a “math genius.” By popular belief, having tanned skin, dark hair, and squinty eyes is generally similar to being born with a math-oriented, “smart” brain, which leads to Asians scoring higher on tests and examinations. However, few children in Asian-American households begin learning multiplication tables in the first grade. On the contrary, these scholars are hard working, self-motivating and deserving of the scores they receive. In reality, Asians are not naturally math prodigies and they deal with the same situations as their fellow non-Asian students. A person’s success is defined by much more than their race. It is possible that Asian-Americans earn higher scores in math because they truly enjoy studying the subject, they must achieve higher in order to be accepted into college, or they strive to uphold the common myth that math is in their blood. These scores do not come easily. These students must work hard and deal with a tremendous amount of stress in order to avoid receiving an “Asian F,” which typically translates to an “A-.” In this essay, then, closely examining the work ethic of Asian-Americans will show that the “Asian advantage” does not exist.
ReplyDelete“Feminists” are often regarded as individuals who hate males. They see feminists as a group, primarily composed of women, who wish to tear down the patriarchy in order to gain success. However, some feminists are misandrists because they interpret men as sexist, oppressive individuals. On the contrary, most feminists admire the respect that males receive and the success that stems from a plethora of opportunities. Moreover, feminists seek to accomplish equal rights as males in regards to political, social, and economic standards. For the truth is women are equally diplomatic, strong, and intelligent as men. Although men and women have different strengths and weaknesses, as a whole, they should measure up equally in regards to each of these categories. In this essay, then, feminists do not aim to tear down males, rather seek to attain equal rights as deserved.

ReplyDeleteFootball players, the so called mean, scatterbrained reckless, conceited and rambunctious people of the world. People claim all of those negative stereotypes about people like me because we "hit hard" with our helmets which deminishes the brain. However, there are a large number of football players who tend to be intellectual, friendly, fundamental careful and some of the most humble people you could ever meet. You know, there is more to us Foosball players than you think. Yes we like to hit hard and run the ball fast or throw the ball as high and as long as we can but, I mean seriously haven't you ever heard of the term STUDENT-ATHLETE it means grades comes before sports which means we are inclined to maintain at least some sort of standard of a decent academic standing. Also think about this not everyone who was a standout athlete got a scholarship that was for football some of us walked on and a lot of us take pride in being great in the classroom anyways so be next time you see a football player, don't just think "oh he's a ball player he must be unintellectual" no try having a conversation about a political topic or ask him his opinion on something, you'd be surprised on how much detail they can go into.
ReplyDeleteI hate the stereotype all teenagers are rebels. My parents say that all the time, even my grandparents say it sometimes. I feel like my parents aren’t the only one who feels this way about teenagers. Older people say that teenagers “don’t listen and think they know everything.” When I was a teenager and I still am, I use to rebel against my parents all the time. For example when I was younger my parents and I would always get into an argument about curfew. Sometimes I would come home supper late at night or not even come home until the next morning. They told me over and over not to do it and it never changed. They took my TV out of my room and all other electronic devices they could find. They even went as far as taking my bed away out of my room for a couple days. The older generation may see that as being “disrespectful” or fighting authority. I feel like times have changed it’s not like back in the day when the older generation was teenagers. There is way more technology people act different it’s just different times now in my eyes. That’s why I don’t see it as being “disrespectful” or fighting authority. I see it as a life style and part of me as a person. I feel like you have to go out and explore the world if you ever want to make anything out of yourself, you can’t just stay in the house all day and night and not do anything that’s boring.
ReplyDeleteIn an age where technology is everywhere and microsoft is ranked second among the most valuable companies in the world, microsoft's office programs rank as some of their best work. The world sees microsoft office as the easiest and most effective program for creating documents, spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations according to a recent study by TopTenReviews.com. However, one program that was not taken into consideration was the office programs created by Google. On the contrary, Google produced programs such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, operating similar to Microsoft’s office programs but free of charge. For the truth is that Google’s office programs are optimal for group work as any program can be shared simply by adding an email of any group members. In this essay, then, closely examining Google’s office program compared to Microsoft’s will validate that Google’s office programs are clearly a better value and option for creating any type of document, spreadsheet or powerpoint.
ReplyDeleteWearing baggy pants, hoodies and reeking of cigarette smoke often creates a bad impression. Walking on the streets with this type of clothing creates suspicions not only to other pedestrians but also to the police. At least back home, people get searched without any true evidence of any crime, just because of the way they dress and look like. Even though often the impression of an outlaw that is created is true, it does not make the profiling of a stranger right. I have known many people with this type of dress code that are law abiding citizens. The way one looks like should not affect the way they are treated by other citizens nor the law.
ReplyDeleteModel minority is a mythical term that often associates with Asian American in the current society. People see model minority as an ethnic group that is perceived that generally achieve higher level of income, education, and stability in America now days. The idea that Asian Americans are distinct among minority groups and immune to the challenges faced by other people of color is a particularly sensitive issue for the community during social justice arguments, stating that Asians do not have to work as hard as other colored races to claim status in American society. However, this general conception about Asian American is false. On the contrary, majority of the Asian Americans have to work as just as hard as other colored races to reach certain level of status. Asian Americans were the center of many prejudice events in American history as well. From discriminatory immigration laws to unfair labor legislations to internment camps during World War II, Asian Americans have fought hard to achieve current image by focusing on higher quality educations. For the truth is that despite that Asian American are deemed to have positive stereotypes, racism still exists in the present, especially in school and workplace. In this essay, the display of racism towards Asian American in numerous occasions and environments will debunk the idea of model minority towards Asian American.
ReplyDeleteBy the associative power of the human mind, the word 'Communism' triggers images of cult of personality leaders, huge militaries, gulags and nuclear threats. It is rightly seen as an atheistic doctrine but wrongly equated as being amoral or immoral governance. However, people don't realize that the root word of Communism is 'Commune', from communal masses associated with the Christian tradition. By this spirit, Communism is about building communities that take care of each other. Lenin, one of the prophets of this doctrine, made his name during the first world by around Europe by writing on pacifism and futility of war - therefore, the Bolshevik revolution should no longer be seen as war created to satisfy war-mongering sociopaths but as a war necessitated to get rid of old machinery that had fought the first great war meaninglessly. Furthermore, the idea of cult of personality made famous by the statues of Kims In Pyongyang, Mao's portrait at Tiananmen square and Stalin renaming Volgograd Stalingrad are isolated examples made by ignorant, the battle cry of all Communists is "Equality"; there isn't any doctrine other than this that promises that everyone is allowed equal access and opportunity to life.
ReplyDeleteAfter serving a term in the oval office, presidents are notorious for being heavily criticized and ranked among their predecessors by the media. Harry S. Truman is not usually ranked among the top five presidents of the United States of America to serve, however, he is the best president to serve. The reason he was ranked so low was because of a mixture of being ahead of his time and making many controversial issues, such as being a forefront leader in civil rights. In order to rank a president, one must evaluate the key characteristics that define a successful president, which is their success in their domestic policies, foreign policies, and if they were affected by the media. Although majority of the presidents allow the media to be their kryptonite for success, Truman, on the other hand, was not afraid to make controversial issues and be unpopular.
ReplyDeleteA popular belief among older generations is that video games are not beneficial to the mind. They see people who play video games as mindless zombies in front of a TV wasting their life away. Other generations did not grow up with the technology we have today, so many of them do not understand how these games can actually be beneficial. However, there are plenty of aspects in video games that actually help to improve the mind. Many video games incorporate puzzles into their levels, forcing the player to use their mind to advance in the game. In fact, in the apple app store under games, there are two categories dedicated to puzzle and strategy games. One good example of a popular puzzle game would be Flow, a simple game where all you have to do is connect dots of the same color within a grid. The challenge of this though is that you cannot overlap the lines connecting the dots, so you must work around them until you have successfully connected all the dots on that level. Many other games are multiplayer, forcing the players to work together to complete a goal, which helps to promote teamwork. The only way for older generations to understand that these games can be beneficial to the mind would be to have them play the games themselves.
ReplyDeleteAs a citizen of New Jersey, I would like to address the idea that we are not all "guidos". Many of you may know of the show "The Jersey Shore". This is a show where a group of steroid using and lip injecting alcoholics get to share with their every move with the world. We are not all like this. New Jersey is a beautiful state full of very nice people. We do however have a large Italian population but I can assure you that they do not act how the group of "guidos" do on the show.
ReplyDelete“You throw like a girl” is just one of many phrases heard on the daily by people who believe that gender defines someone. They say things like this as if it is meant to be a derogatory comment. As if throwing like a girl is a bad thing and something to be ashamed of. But derogatory comments are not just made at women in the sporting world, but also the work environment and everyday tasks. Lots of people, even including some women embrace these stereotypes. They encourage the thought that there are some jobs that are really only for men, such as physical labor, and some jobs that are for women, such as cooking. For the truth is women are just as capable to perform physical tasks as men are and to play sports as successfully as men and should not be held back because of these brute, meaningless, thoughts. In this essay, then, women will be seen as equals, in the work environment, sports, and in everyday life activities.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people easily believe the nutrition fact on the back of cookie box, which says that the cookies don’t contain any trans fat. Because facts should be facts indeed, people are mistaken to believe what the supposedly facts claim. On the contrary of what many people think, they are untrue. However, they may be true sometimes. For the truth is that they don’t provide the people with an important piece of information that justifies their partial factuality, which is that the cookies may contain trans fat up to 0.5g when stated as 0g. Apprarently, this is one of the FDA rules to list the nutrition facts. In this essay, then, a series of examples will demonstrate the problem of misleading nutrition facts listings.
ReplyDeleteAccording to popular opinion, the level of one's gpa seems to be synonymous with the level of intelligence one individual possesses. They seem to believe in the notion that a number or letter stuck next to a grade is the be-all end-all in intelligence. Although conventional wisdom has it that grades reflect intelligence this simply is not true. I insist that it is not true because there are many factors that go into a grade. The difficulty of the class, the stress of a workload, and other outside factors including spending time in a sport or with friends. I know many colleagues who display an enormous amount of intelligence, however, their gpa simply doesn't reflect that. It is widely known that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of facebook, failed out of Harvard. Was it because of lack of intelligence? No. Some are just better at structured learning while others just have a mass amount of intelligence that doesn't translate to a classroom.
ReplyDeleteMany people associate the east coast with being white, fabricating an idea that everyone dons madras pants and pastel colored polo’s as they pad around on their yacht. They see the east coast as highfalutin, and that the people who live there similarly embody this perspective. While some of these assumptions may hold true, they are by no means an end-all. Instead, they are a stereotype, one that doesn’t allow for exceptions or differences in this constructed vision. For the truth is, while many people do fit this stereotype, there are many who don’t, including myself. In my years here, I’ve been asked the typical question of where I’m from dozens of times, and more often than not, people are surprised when I say Connecticut. I know for certain it’s because of my outward appearance, which differs hugely from the typical image that comes to mind, being half-Indian and favoring Docs over Sperry’s. Though I do depart from the physical stereotype, I enjoy activities that are generally deemed “east coast”, like sailing and rowing crew – illustrating that nobody is necessarily entirely one thing or another. Blanket statements are ignorant to make no matter what they pertain to, and I find them to be especially so in reference to the east coast.
ReplyDeleteThe way people optically canvas football players in a classroom automatically cerebrate the player just there so he could play football an not take school solemnly. They optically discern football players as the kid that doesn't have to work strenuously in the classroom an put in the same amount of work other students put in. However,Their are two types of players some elevate above an some fall in the category of not working strenuously in class an sitting in the back doing nothing. On the contrary, The players that elevate above already know what to expect from other students an teachers they know they have a target on their backs an everyone optically canvassing they every move, As a component of elevating above always set good examples. For the truth is to be called a student-Athlete its a privilege an it's not facile to do,Yes as a student it's not facile by far but cerebrate of all the work that go into being a student-athlete on and off the field, When kids done for the day at school student-athletes going to the next part of their day,When you getting ready for bed student-athletes starting their homework from that day. What I'm trying to get at is student-athletes always going to have somethings going on thru out the day an it take a lot to stay consistent.
ReplyDeleteFrom an early age I was looked down upon, for not having the ability to achieve the work that my other classmates were capable of. Having a learning disability, which in my case is Dyslexia my peers around me would stereotype me as stupid. People would put me under this stereotype, for a numerous amount of reasons. Being in special education classes, not possessing the best skills in reading, and math. These characteristics don't determine that I am stupid, it just means that I have a different way of learning, and I get more out of it, by having to work harder than most people do.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think about Hawai’i most likely the first think that comes to mind is the beautiful beaches, carefree locals and a great place to go vacation and live. However, not everything is as easy going as it may seem. For the truth is, Hawai'i has the highest rate of homelessness per capita among the 50 states, with an estimated 487 homeless per 100,000 people, followed by New York and Nevada, according to federal statistics. The problem is not the locals, but the “Mainland Snowbirds” that come to the tropical paradise that make up the most of the homelessness population. The term “Mainland Snowbirds” are a group of tourists that migrate to the islands to escape the brutal weather from the mainland, but never make the trip back home due to the few belongings that they possess that they pawn off to buy basic necessities. Unfortunately, due to Hawai’i having to import most of all of its products, prices on the islands have inflated at absurd rates that it is not surprising that the homelessness rates are at an all time high. The homelessness population has increased at such a rate that the state struggles with their funding towards these programs, but instead they focus on their tourism income and take advantage of the beautiful scenery that Hawai’i has to offer.

ReplyDeleteThe coined term “field fairies” has been used for soccer players by many other people from many different sports. When people think of soccer players, they immediately think of people twirling like ballerinas around the field and falling on the ground in pain every time one little piece of their body is touched. Although, These are all stereotypes that do not give soccer players some of the justice they deserve and although many of the soccer players do have some of these tendencies, not every soccer player, and in fact most soccer players do not have this kind of behavior. On the contrary, these so called “ballerinas”, actually have to work hard to become fit, and lift just as hard to become strong to stay on the soccer field and prevent injuries. The truth of the matter is, soccer is a tough sport and people need to be strong in order to play it. This term “field fairies” is just not correct when thinking of a sport some people have played all their lives and is physically demanding to bodies. In this essay, then, soccer can be seen to be physically demanding sport through the injuries taken place, how fit a soccer player has to be, and the physical toll taken on a soccer player during the games.
ReplyDeleteThe term “Muslim” tends to be synonymous with “terrorist” in many people’s minds. They see someone with dark features and olive toned skin and automatically have assumptions and prejudices about them. Once they have confirmed their stereotypical assumption that the Middle Eastern looking person is Muslim, they often ask them questions such as, “since you are a muslim you’re a terrorist right”? They might follow up with, “Why does your God Allah tell you to kill people?” or “Why don’t you go back to your country”? Not only are these accusations completely incorrect, but also are extremely offensive and hurtful. Those people don’t realize that being a terrorist has no correlation to your religion, skin color, or place of birth. On the contrary, not all people have this negative view on Islam and Muslim people, but a large majority do associate being Muslim with being a terrorist. By definition terrorism is: the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. By that definition anyone could do such an act regardless of ethnicity or faith. In accordance, one could argue that the true act of terrorism at hand is not only being treated unfairly because of your religion, but also living in constant fear of alienation, public humiliation, and in some cases negative physical confrontation because some people hold you responsible for acts of terrorism that you did not commit. Similarly, it is like saying that all caucasian people are part of the KKK and should individually pay for the injustices that such a group has done in the past to African Americans. This expectation is not only unfair but irrational. For the truth is that it is an inaccurate stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists. In this essay, then, Muslim’s will be reflected upon with the same respect and understanding as people of any racial or religious background.
ReplyDeleteStudents assume that a “computer scientist” is someone who is considered a “nerd” or “geek”. They view “computer scientists” as students whose days end and then they are planted in front of their computer to finish there dark quest on “World of Warcraft.” However most computer scientists at owu play sports such as basketball or football, without a single thought going into how they're going to reach the next level is “League of Legends”. The truth behind “computer scientists, is that they are normal people who have different lives from each other. With further reading into this essay, you will soon see that these so called “nerds” are more like you that you'd expect.

ReplyDeletePeople see lacrosse players as “Pretty boy rich kids,” that were given everything in the world by there parents. They see them as people who never had to work hard for anything and just walked into where they are now. However, people should know that no lacrosse player I have ever met had the opportunity to walk to where they are now. Everyone that I have ever met that played lacrosse put the work on and off the field, that also means putting work into the classroom as well. Lacrosse is known as “the fastest sport on two feet,” and that should put it into perspective that it takes a lot of training and time to play it just like any other sport you may attempt to play. Lacrosse is no different than any other sport, people need to realize that lacrosse is no different from football, basketball, and baseball, they all take time to be good at and that nothing comes overnight.

ReplyDeleteNew Yorkers are seen as a group of people who are self-centered, rushed, and rude. People all over the United States judge New Yorkers as money-hungry robots who will shove you on the sidewalk and skip out on a “casual hello.” However, the people of New York do not intend to give off this un-welcoming vibe, as they are just acting to acclimate to their surroundings. Being raised in New York City is much more than learning to walk quickly and avoid eye contact, but rather to focus on your own well being to be as successful as possible. However, wealth is not the only factor of importance, because New York City is a place filled with culture, art, and caring people. Once you are able to understand that people are just acting as those around them, and to look past the stereotypes, you can emerge yourself in all the amazing opportunities and experiences the Big Apple has to offer.
There are many pre-conceived stereotypes about teenagers that no longer have any merit in today’s society. For example, the theory that all teenagers spend all their time on social media is really incorrect. Teenagers no longer spend “all their time on their phones” or “never get off Facebook”. Rather, most teens I know spend more time outside then on Facebook. In fact, Facebook has been in decline for over two years now. Students in a college environment are much more focused on their in-person social lives then their Internet personas. This “strawman” is mostly due in part to the rise and improvement of the cell phone over the recent years. But no only teenagers are using phones in this modern day and age. As a matter of fact, use of Facebook amongst adults is still just as common as Facebook use amongst teens. The idea that teens aggressively use Facebook in 2016 is no longer a vaild stereotype because teens have all begun to stray away from the website and have moved on past it.

ReplyDeleteBecause men’s lacrosse is so rough and women’s lacrosse isn’t, a lot of people will say its not a sport. They say is doesn’t take any skill because of all the rules in the game. However, women’s lacrosse is just as skillful as men’s lacrosse. On the contrary, because of how shallow the pockets of our sticks are compared to the pocket of a men’s stick some would even consider women’s lacrosse harder. For the truth is that men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse are both very skillful games even referred to as “the fastest game on two feet”. In this essay, then, the game of women’s lacrosse will be shown by sharing the history, everything a player puts into to the game, and the toll it takes on their body to make it such an amazing sport.

ReplyDeleteIt is often argued that colorism has no effect on the black community because the discrimination that is associated with the slaves mentalities have decreased within the black community. However, it is not yet completely eradicated from the society. It is natural inside the black community to differentiate associates solely on the pigment of their skin (dark or light-skinned).This distinction originated during the days of slavery as dark-skinned blacks labored in the fields while light-skinned blacks worked indoors as babysitter and or servant. Slave owners and even slaves gave lighter-skinned blacks more respect. To this day, the distinction between light and dark skin lingers to be a foundation of antipathy and tension within the black community. Colorism affects the self-image of Americans by determining who and what is deemed beautiful and which beauty features is socially appropriate. Slavery is over, but the problems colorism causes remain. In the essay, I will attempt to illustrate the effect that colorism self-image has created in our society and how it has hindered the growth of the African America community.
